2006-04-11 - Homer Tunnel
After the last few photos of Milford Sound and Mitre Peak, I thought it was time for something a little different. This is the Homer Tunnel, which burrows over 1km through the mountainside and provides access to Milford Sound. It took almost 20 years to dig the tunnel and driving through it for the first time is quite an experience. Even though they have installed a few lights in the tunnel, it is still very dark. So dark that it makes it just about impossible to take any photos while moving.
This shot was the result of an experiment that involved setting the camera to ISO 3200 and waiting for the end of the tunnel to come into view. Yes, it's still blurry and poorly exposed but I like the effect. Interestingly, although this looks like a monochromatic image, it is an unaltered colour capture.
